History of Heidelberg Gauteng

Heidelberg traces it’s origins back to 1861, when Heinrich Ueckermann acquired part of the Farm Langlaagte, and established a general dealer at the crossing of Port Natal (Durban) / Potchefstroom road, with the main road between Cape Town and Pretoria. In 1865 he appointed T.W. Fannin as surveyor for a town development, which named after his alma mater in Germany, and Heidelberg was established in 1866. During the First War of Independence, Heidelberg served as the capital of the then Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek, from 1880 to 1883. In 1885 the Witwatersrand gold reef was discovered in the Heidelberg District and the Office of the Mining Commissioner was established in the town. Steeped in History and nestled in the beautiful Suikerbosrand Hills, with the Blesbokspruit flowing through it, and bordering on 13000 ha Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, this picturesque town offers an unsurpassed, affordable country lifestyle.
